CAIRO — Britain is plagued by resurgent racism with the country’s leading institutions fostering a climate of discrimination against ethnic minorities, a galaxy of dignitaries have charged. “Racism is sneaking back in to mainstream respectability and this is very dangerous,” Massoud Shadjareh, chair of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, told The Independent on Friday, March 9.
In the most high-profile case, Tory Party leader David Cameron was forced to sack his frontbench spokesman on homeland security, Patrick Mercer, for making racist comments against the Black community.
Mercer has said that being called a “black bastard” was a normal part of Army life.
Shortly afterwards, the Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was investigating a brutal assault of a black teenager by a white police officer outside a Sheffield nightclub.
An Oxford University professor has also said that immigrants contribute the equivalent of “a Mars bar a month” to Britain.
Home Secretary John Reid also sparked furor by promising to make life difficult for illegal immigrants in Britain.
He further came under fire after pledging a crackdown on foreigners who “steal our benefits”.
Scotland Yard has also faced accusations of discrimination after denying a promotion to one of Britain’s most senior Muslim officer and an outspoken critic of racism in the police ranks.
“It is not isolated incidents … it’s been happening for some time,” said Shadjareh.
