The threat of an Al-Qaeda terror plot is back in the news today with the Home Secretary warning of an attack on the UK’s energy infrastructure.

Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute earlier today (25th), John Reid said that terrorists could cause devastation through an “electronic attack” on the UK’s infrastructure. He said that Al Qaeda’s aim was to “bleed us to bankruptcy”, adding that Western energy supplies could be among targets threatened.

“It is easy to appreciate the devastation of a physical attack and what it can bring but we must not underestimate the potentially devastating consequences of an electronic attack,” he told the audience.

Reid’s speech comes in the wake of the arrest of six people Tuesday on charges of abetting terrorism in Britain, and reports of leaks of intelligence documents. He also announced the restructuring of the Home Office that will see the creation of the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism.

This warning comes less than 24 hours after the head of the anti-terror squad, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clark has said the threat from terrorism is “deadly, enduring and to a significant extent targeted at the UK.”In a speech last night he warned:
“We are not looking at discrete terrorist cells that can be investigated, isolated and dismantled.

“We are seeing networks within networks, connections within connections, and links between individuals that cross local, national and international boundaries.”

Internet hub

Back in March http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article1496831.ece carried a report that Scotland Yard has uncovered evidence that Al-Qaeda has been plotting to bring down the internet in Britain, causing chaos to business and the London Stock Exchange.

In a series of raids, detectives have recovered computer files revealing that terrorist suspects had targeted a high-security internet “hub” in London.

The facility, in Docklands, houses the channel through which almost every bit of information on the internet passes in or out of Britain.

The suspects, who were arrested, had targeted the headquarters of Telehouse Europe, which houses Europe’s biggest “web hotel”, containing dozens of “servers” , the boxes which contain the information that makes up the web.

Security experts say the plot against Britain’s internet “hub” reflects the constantly changing threat from Al-Qaeda and related Islamic extremist groups.

Gas terminals

Last year MI5 uncovered intelligence which suggested that Islamic terrorist suspects had carried out reconnaissance of the huge Bacton complex of gas terminals on the Norfolk coast. The threat led to the deployment of armed guards around the plant.

A senior Whitehall security official said the internet plotters appeared to be planning to infiltrate the “hub”, possibly to blow it up from the inside, according to evidence on a computer hard drive seized in raids on the homes of terror suspects in southern England last year.

“The Telehouse facility was the subject of intense reconnaissance. The evidence suggests that it was one of a range of options considered by the suspects,” the official said.

The BNP’s proposals for dealing with terrorism have been mentioned many times. If Labour were serious about dealing with the terrorist threat they could and should close the door to the wave of Islamic migrants and carry out a full census of just who is living in our home and deal with those illegals accordingly. We totally condemn British involvement in the American war-for-oil conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and bringing our troops back home to defend our borders would also go some considerable way to neutralize the threat from Islamic terrorists.
