Some top British universities are accepting overseas students who are less well-qualified than UK students. The cash-strapped universities are admitting overseas students, who would have to pay the full costs of a degree, unlike their UK counterparts.
Admissions tutors at universities including Edinburgh, Manchester and Sheffield have said they would be prepared to admit overseas students who had not achieved the required A level grades for the course in question. They have said that overseas students did not have to meet the same academic criteria applied to other students.
Some UK universities are decreasing their places for UK students whilst increasing the percentage of places for overseas students. Oxford is to reduce its UK places by 1,000 from 11,000 to 10,000 whilst overseas places will rise from 8% to 15% by 2010. A large number of those overseas students come from China and India. Maybe if more government funding was available for UK students then more British people may have the chance of higher education.
