New law would allow 20,000 Iraqis into America
Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) is sponsoring The Responsibility to Iraqi Refugees Act, aimed at bringing twenty thousand Iraqis into the United States as refugees. The legislation would also allow 15,000 special
visas annually for the next four years. This last category would target those who collaborated with the US occupation forces, people like the judge who sentenced Saddam Hussein to death; he has already fled Iraq for the West.
Bluemenauer is supported by Representatives Chris Shays (R-CT) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL). Schakowsky is a member of the far-left Congressional Progressive Caucus, which has toed the neonservative line in the past.
Since people may not claim refugee status if they aid and abet the “enemies of the United States,” the Bluemenauer law would exempt these Iraqis, since he claims that many of them have been “coerced” to support insurgent groups.
Bluemenauer is calling the refugee crisis “the worst humanitarian crisis next to Darfur,” which is another neocon hobbyhorse and a favorite issue with Bluemenauer. America has a bad habit of destroying places and then relocating displaced natives to the United States. This was seen with the large Vietnamese and Hmong populations, as well as with many Somalis. In one spectacular recent case, Albanian Muslims were accused of plotting a rampage against personnel at Fort Dix, which had housed 4,000 ethnic Albanian refugees when the US and NATO carried out the 1999 attack on Kosovo.Local social services and well-meaning aid groups will no doubt carry the financial cost of helping the Iraqi refugees, just as local and state governments carry the burden of the federally-mandated invasion from Latin America. The social costs are inaculable, with local people forced to suffer the influx of war-scarred Muslims.
The proposal seems oddly-scheduled, as growing European-American anger over government amnesty attempts swells nationwide. Additionally, the shooting rampage in Salt Lake City, when a refugee from Bosnia gunned down five at a mall and the Fort Dix plot have highlighted the danger Muslims represent domestically. In large numbers, as in Europe, they also represent a demographic threat.
