An illegal immigrant, who should have left Britain five years ago, is being questioned over the fatal stabbing of a policeman.

PC Jonathan Henry was killed on Monday shortly after going on duty. Along with colleagues, he had responded to a 999 call regarding a man going berserk with a knife in Luton town centre.

PC Henry was stabbed and two other men were also injured before the suspect was subdued, using a Taser gun and a baton round.

The suspect, named as Ikechukwu Tennyson Obih, originally from Nigeria, is being held as an “overstayer” whose visa had expired five years ago but he had been allowed to escape deportation. The suspect was taken to hospital and yesterday faced the bench at Luton Magistrates Court charged with the murder of PC Henry. He is also accused of the attempted murder of window cleaners Steven Chamberlain and David Knight in the same incident.

He faces a fourth charge of entering as a trespasser a flat in Luton with intent to steal having a weapon of offence, a screw, with him.

He is alleged to have stolen car keys, a picture and a box set of DVDs.

The government estimates that there are 570,000 illegal immigrants in the UK, including hundreds of thousands of “overstayers”.
