Tribute website for have-a-go hero who attacked Glasgow terrorists
A baggage handler who helped tackle the suspected Glasgow Airport bombers has had a website created in his honour.
Excitable BAA worker John Smeaton animatedly told reporters how he had raced to help a police officer restrain the suspects after they crashed a burning Jeep into the terminal on Saturday.
During a TV interview immediately afterwards, which was broadcast around the world, he described how his first thought on being confronted by the two suspects in the burning vehicle was: “What’s the score? I’ve got to get this sorted.”
“I managed to knock him down, I caught him a blow with my elbow,” he told newscrews.
A website called Johnsmeaton.com has since been created hailing his effort, and it has already been deluged with scores of tributes and humorous comments.
Mr Smeaton told ITN that “Glasgow doesn’t accept this” and that if you try any more of this nonsense “we’ll set about you”.The site also urges visitors to “pledge a pint” to Mr Smeaton as a reward. The aim is to raise enough money money to buy 1000 pints at the Glasgo Airport Holiday Inn for the “have-a-go-hero” who has been taken to GLaswegian’s hearts.
The website claims Mr Smeaton’s “have-a-go” attitude is typical of the Glaswegian spirit, and hailed him as the airport’s answer to Jack Bauer, the all-action hero of American TV drama 24.
The site adds: “Here’s to John.
“This man shows us that the law-abiding, honest, brave citizen is still very much with us.”
