UK: BNP is “set to make embarrassing inroads” in Sedgefield

Pro-White British party on the move!

News article filed by BNP man on the ground in Sedgefield

So says the left-liberal Guardian newspaper, which is not known for its generosity to the British National Party, as Labour drafted in the former MP for the area (and former Prime Minister), Tony Blair, in a last-minute effort to shore up the Labour vote in what looks like a nail-biting finish in Sedgefield.

More significantly, Councillor Richard Barnbrook, the BNP’s London Mayoral candidate next year, also made a surprise visit to the constituency in support of the BNP candidate, Andrew Spence, and was warmly greeted by voters in a tour of the constituency and a visit to the town centre in Newton Aycliffe, the focus of much of the campaigning in this election, as Labour defended their neglect of the area and the other parties (other than UKIP, indicating how out-of-touch their lacklustre campaign has been) sought to take advantage of Labour’s weakness on this crucial issue in the constituency.

One curious aspect of Labour’s campaign has been the defensive (and occasionally, very aggressive) nature of their campaign, despite sitting on an 18,000 majority. Although the thuggish displays by Labour at the start of the campaign (prompting the pro-Labour Northern Echo newspaper to appeal for calm) have not been repeated openly, the Blairite candidate, Phil Wilson, has been rattled at the degree of rebellion amongst usually solid Labour voters in the constituency, as they look to make a protest vote that will really count. Another curious aspect of Labour’s campaign has been the strange absence of Phil’s partner, Margaret, who works for Phil’s PR company, from the Labour propaganda distributed in the constituency, Margaret, we are told, is also a keen, committed and enthusiastic worker for the Labour party. Obviously, it is a mysterious PR decision on behalf of Labour to airbrush poor Margaret out of the campaign, but we do wonder why, as do many voters in Sedgefield?Whippets

The chubby Lib Dem candidate, Greg Stone, not having anyone remotely human to cuddle in his propaganda opted, bizarrely, for a whippet in a small glossy magazine which seems to have been aimed at young people in an attempt to ape glossy celebrity magazines, judging by its inane content. While fellow whippet-cuddlers will no doubt be impressed by Greg’s familiarity with the unfortunate hound and everyone can have a good laugh at the Lib Dem’s cack-handed attempts to ingratiate themselves with the voters, insightful Lib Dem watchers know only too well the less than wholesome nature of the Lib Dems which very rarely breaks through the spin.

One example is the case of Karl Lindon, a prospective Lib Dem candidate, who campaigned for the Lib Dems on gay and lesbian issues and whose company supplied the website of Lib Dem President, Simon Hughes, who is also the MP for Bermondsey and North Southwark in London and who visited Sedgefield in support of Greg Stone. Karl Lindon was recently jailed for three years for sharing the 2,500 indecent images of children on his computer with a ring of 47 online paedophiles.

With hindsight, Lib Dem candidates cuddling whippets doesn’t seem that bad now!

Tory collapse likely

Meanwhile, the Tories have been attempting (probably vainly) to prevent the collapse of their vote and a slip down the rankings from second place to fourth, as happened in the Hartlepool by-election in 2004. Tory party workers in Newton Aycliffe have been astonished by the degree of support for the BNP and openly remarked about this surge to BNP activists who manned a stall throughout the campaign in the town centre. So worried has Tory candidate Graham Robb become that he approached his fellow PR spin doctor and Labour candidate, Phil Wilson, while at the BBC for a debate (in which only three of the eleven candidates were invited) and said that the “Labour candidate and I agreed that the media have not shown enough scrutiny of the BNP.” He continued, the BNP had “got away with distributing material that does not reflect the nastier side of its platform. If you agree, contact the local media and tell them,” said Graham on his MySpace website. Well, coming from a member of the original ‘nasty’ party, that comment surely takes the biscuit, but it is nice to see Labour and Tory in full agreement on the quality of the BNP’s campaign in Sedgefield.

Echo pulls plug on democracy

Actually, much to Graham and Phil’s satisfaction, no doubt, the media has finally become agitated by the presence of the BNP in this by-election. After initially ignoring the BNP campaign, the pro-Labour, multi-national owned Northern Echo, pronounced in a thundering editorial: “Today (July 17th, though it is repeated today as well), we publish an advertisement for the British National Party. It is not something we have done lightly or from which we take any satisfaction, because we oppose everything that this far-right party stands for. However, in going ahead with publication, we have taken into account the fact that the advertisement is perfectly legal and that the BNP is a legitimate party which is entitled to field a candidate in the Sedgefield by-election.” It concludes, sanctimoniously: “But when the people of Sedgefield vote for a successor to Tony Blair on Thursday, we call on them to do so in pursuit of hope rather than hate which the BNP stands for.” So much for a free and impartial press and in another twist, the advert has the Editor’s disclaimer across the top, which reads: “The BNP is a legally entitled to field a candidate in the election and to campaign. However, publication of this advertisement by The Northern Echo is not an endorsement of the party or its views.”

OK, Mr Editor, we get the message, but we hope you put a similar disclaimer above every other political advertisement as polling day approaches. Failure to do so would leave the Northern Echo open to accusations of bias and impartiality by all concerned, not just the BNP.

With polling day almost upon us, the BNP is gearing up for one last push to make the Guardian’s helpful prediction a reality. We need your help, financially or otherwise. Help make history, send all donations to: Andrew Spence, PO Box 814, Sedgefield, Stockon-on-Tees, TS19 1EU. Make cheques and postal orders payable to the ‘British National Party’.
