Beijing calls on citizens to rally behind Olympics
Beijing’s top Olympic organiser issued a call for mass public support for the 2008 Games on Wednesday, urging the city’s residents to help present a clean, civilised and stable capital to the world. “Organising the Olympic Games is a huge undertaking that will become a milestone in the history of the Chinese nation,” said Liu Qi, the city’s top Communist Party leader and head of the Beijing Games organising committee. “This reflects the rising overall strength of the nation, our increasing international status and the growing vigour of the Chinese people,” he said in a speech timed to the upcoming one-year countdown to the Games, which officially open on August 8, 2008.
Liu said citizens from every walk of life should “participate, contribute and enjoy” the success of China’s first-ever hosting of an Olympic Games. He said the rough-edged city will breathe new life into campaigns begun earlier to eliminate notorious local habits such as public spitting, queue-jumping and other social ills as well as its worsening environmental problems.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/China/Beijing_calls_on_citizens_to_rally_behind_Olympics/articleshow/2233213.cms
