Black journalist slain in Oakland, California, allegedly for looking into race cult
A 19-year-old handyman who worked for the Your Black Muslim Bakery has apparently confessed to being the gunman who brazeningly walked up to Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey on downtown street and killed him, according to a published report Saturday.
The Oakland Tribune — who Bailey had once worked for — reported in its Saturday editions that Devaughndre Broussard, 19, told them he killed Bailey because he was angry over stories the journalist had written about the bakery.
Broussard was among the seven people arrested during Friday morning’s raids. At his home, police reportedly recovered the shotgun that they believe was used to kill Bailey, the paper reported.
Colleagues said Oakland Post editor Chauncey the 57-year-old Bailey — the editor of the Oakland Post — had been working on a story about Your Black Muslim Bakery before he was ambushed and slain Thursday morning near the Alameda County courthouse in downtown Oakland.
“The search warrant yielded several weapons and other evidence of value including evidence linking the murder of Chauncey Bailey to members of the Your Black Muslim Bakery,” Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan said. The pre-dawn raids followed a yearlong investigation into a variety of violent crimes, Jordan said.
Seven people were arrested, including the son of the bakery’s founder, on charges including homicide, robbery and assault, Oakland police spokesman Roland Holmgren said. It was unclear whether those charges were tied to Bailey’s slaying.
