Police have reported Channel 4 to the broadcasting regulator, OFCOM, over the way footage from an undercover investigation was edited, amid claims that the Police have no evidence and are acting in a politically correct manner.
The programme Undercover Mosque which went out on 15th January investigated mosques run by organisations claiming to be dedicated to moderation and dialogue with other faiths.
West Midlands Police carried out an investigation of three speakers who appeared on the programme but no charges are likely to be brought, claiming insufficient evidence. Instead Police at one stage bizarrely considered charging Channel 4 for broadcasting material likely to stir up racial hatred.
The Crown Prosecution Service says the programme “completely distorted” what the speakers said. CPS lawyer Bethan David examined 56 hours of footage from the Dispatches investigation – of which a fraction went to air.She said: “The splicing together of extracts from longer speeches appears to have completely distorted what the speakers were saying.
“But in this case we have been dealing with a heavily edited television programme, apparently taking out of context aspects of speeches which in their totality could never provide a realistic prospect of any convictions.”
No evidence
In a statement Channel 4 spokesman Gavin Dawson said: “We believe the offensive views expressed by the people revealed in the programme speak for themselves.
“We didn’t put these words into people’s mouths and all extracts were carefully contextualised.
“The West Midlands Police have provided no evidence whatsoever to support their allegations.”
Hatred
In the programme a speaker at the Sparkbrook mosque in Birmingham a preacher is captured on film praising the Taliban. In response to the news that a British Muslim solider was killed fighting the Taliban, the speaker declares: ‘The hero of Islam is the one who separated his head from his shoulders.’
Another speaker says Muslims cannot accept the rule of non-Muslims. ‘You cannot accept the rule of the kaffir [non-Muslim,’ a preacher, Dr Ijaz Mian, tells a meeting held within the mosque. ‘We have to rule ourselves and we have to rule the others.’
The hatred of Muslims towards Non-Muslims is captured on film. “No one loves the kuffar, not a single person here among the Muslims loves the kuffar”. Even Muslims who do not meet the standards are condemned as kuffars. Those who leave Islam are to be killed, literally crucified; hung up on a post for three days and left to bleed to death.
