More violence feared in France over teenage deaths
France is holding its breath after a night of rioting in a Paris suburb, which had echoes of its worst-ever urban disturbances two years ago.
Overnight, businesses, homes and a police station were set alight as youths went on the rampage after the deaths of two teenagers.
Two policemen were seriously injured and 23 more hurt, as well as a fireman.
150 firefighters had to be called in to contain the blazes in the town of Villiers-le-Bel and surrounding communities.
Unlike the incident in Clichy-sous-Bois in 2005, when two youths ran into an electricty sub-station and died, this violence is not thought to have been sparked by a police chase.
A police car collided with a motorbike, but witnesses said it was not travelling at speed. Two youths on the possibly stolen motorbike died, and there are claims the officers didn’t try to help them.
“It must be noted that they weren’t wearing helmets and that they were driving erratically,” said Paul Venry Trollé, the prefect for Val D’Oise.
