The killers walked 15km across other farms to go and kill this couple. One amazing detail which emerged from this testimony was that these three young black attackers had walked 15km to the Fitch farm – crossing several others which they could have robbed just as easily – just to go and murder this elderly white couple. The testimony thus far does not reveal why they targetted this specific couple, which they had never met before.
In the end the three murderers had to split a mere R720 — €62. And they didn’t get this from the Fitch couple — this cash was looted from a neighbouring farm-shop: the old couple did not have any cash in the house, yet in spite of all their protestations while they were being tortured and beaten, the attackers continued to torture the old couple — and finally bludgeoned them to death.Especially Afrikaner rural dwellers — but also white English-speakers and European-born white rural residents — often are tortured in many cruel ways, and for hours on end, before they are murdered. This reign of rural terror basically started ever since the ANC-majority regime took over hegemony of the country. Some 2,980+ farmers and smallholders have already died in similarly cruel ways since 1994.
The judge allowed the court to hear the confession made by now 21-year-old accused co-murderer Simon Duma of Matatiele –describing how he and his cohorts had tortured and beaten 78-year-old Raymond and wife Yvonne, 79, in their Swartberg, Kokstad smallholding’s homestead’s lounge in July 21 2007.
But the young Duma didn’t say why they’d walked all that distance just to attack this one couple. The Fitch couple and their three murderers had never met each other before this horrid day.
The younger black man is standing trial with his uncle, 29-year-old Moses Duma.
They also face a charge of armed robbery. In spite of the younger Duma’s earlier confession, both men have pleaded not guilty. A third man named Seya also participated but is still at large.
Why were these old folks tortured for so long? Post mortem reports handed into court proved that both of the elderly white victims had many burns caused by the molten plastic burning into their skins. Raymond’s clothes were also set alight by the molten plastic after the couple was trussed up.
Simon Duma confessed: “Moses and Seya kicked the window and jumped in. I followed. Moses and Seya caught them as they tried to run away and threw them down. I used shoelaces to tie their hands behind their backs. They did not fight back.
“We shouted at them, asking where the money was and Mr Fitch said that they did not have any. Mrs Fitch was thrown to the floor next to him. Moses and Seya kicked him all over his body and head. I did not try to stop them as we were all together to do the same thing. Mr Fitch was bleeding from the head and she was woken up. Moses and Seya took her to a room and they came back with a small revolver.
“Moses got a plastic bag and lit it and started burning the dripping plastic over Mr Fitch. His legs and upper body were burnt and his clothes also burned. Mrs Fitch was also burnt with the plastic. They were not talking and we went to a spaza shop and broke the door. We took R720 and each got R240.”
