Mr Tony Travers, director, Greater London Group, London School of Economics and well-known leftist commentator who thinks Boris Johnson is far right, said in a recent article that “we should prepare for the eventuality of a crucial BNP win after a by-election victory in Sevenoaks and a near-miss in Bexley.
“This renewed activity by the BNP follows their win of a London Assembly seat last year and the gradual accretion of council seats in many parts of England, Mr Travers wrote.
In a bizarre twisting of logic, Mr Travers said that the “success” of the Barking and Dagenham council in achieving a top CPA rating by the Audit Commission had been “not sufficient to stop the progress of the BNP.”
Why this would be so, only Mr Travers could explain, as he added that there are twelve BNP councillors on the Barking council.“There is a significant chance that this year’s European and local elections will see the election of a number of BNP candidates,” Mr Travers wrote.
Exposing his ignorance of why the BNP has grown, Mr Travers continued: “No one really knows why the BNP has prospered in recent years. After all, it has been strengthening during a long economic boom. There is little doubt the party attempts to exploit the issue of immigration, which has grown since the mid-1990s.
“Yet many places that have large migrant populations do not vote for the BNP in any numbers.
“Some Labour members believe their party has simply lost touch with its roots. Certainly, there appears to be a willingness for a number of voters to switch directly from traditional Labour voting to the BNP.”
Describing the rise of the BNP as a “national political problem” (which it is – for the other parties) the hopelessly biased Mr Travers went on to add that “There must be a risk that in 2010 or soon after the party will win control of a major authority.”
Mr Travers added that he wondered how senior officials would work with a BNP administration – to which BNP Deputy leader Simon Darby commented that they would either work with the BNP authority or be sacked.
The fact that a senior leftist like Mr Travers can openly speculate upon the “eventuality of a BNP Win” shows that the party has now properly entered the mainstream – thanks to the hard work and dedication of its activists and supporters.
