Rep. Jane Harman was allegedly recorded by a Bush administrationwiretap promising a suspected Israeli agent that she would pressure theU.S. government into reducing espionage charges against two othersuspected agents, according to former national security officials. Theformer senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee deniedtrying to influence the spy investigation, reported The AssociatedPress.

Harman also asked the Justice Department to release alltranscripts of her recorded conversations involving the treatment oftwo pro-Israel lobbyists accused of spying. Harman was recorded sayingshe would seek “lenient treatment” for Steven J. Rosen and KeithWeissman, former lobbyists for the American Israel Public AffairsCommittee, reported Congressional Quarterly.

The two werecharged in 2005 with conspiring to communicate defense information tounauthorized personnel in violation of the 1917 Espionage Act.
