By now presumably we all know about Supreme Court Justice nomineeSonia Sotomayor’s history of anti-white racial bias. If not, read up onher now infamous speech at Berkeley in 2001 and her role in the Ricci v. Stefano case. Sotomayor also has a record of siding with minorities in bogus racial and religious discrimination cases. My new action alert contains a sample e-mail that you can send to your Senators urging them to reject Sotomayor.
It is imperative that you vote against SoniaSotomayor for Supreme Court justice on the grounds that she isprejudiced against white people and cannot be relied on to treat themfairly. Her record shows that Sotomayor will strike down legitimateclaims of racial discrimination made by whites and uphold trivial andunfounded claims by minorities.
Sotomayor’s anti-white prejudice is apparent in the now infamouswords she spoke at a university symposium in 2001: “I would hope that awise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more oftenthan not reach a better conclusion [as a judge] than a white male whohasn’t lived that life.” This simple assertion of Hispanic superiorityin matters of justice implies that whites deserve to be discriminatedagainst. Can a person who says such a thing be relied on to treat theraces impartially?
Sotomayor’s anti-white prejudice is also apparent in her judicialdecisions. Her summary dismissal of the Ricci v. DeStefano case, whichdealt with a clear instance of anti-white discrimination, has causedwidespread outrage. While Sotomayor showed no concern overdiscrimination against whites, she has a record of siding withminorities who alleged discrimination even in trivial and dubiouscases, as demonstrated by a number of occasions in which she hasdissented from the court’s majority opinion:
- Sotomayor declared a school guilty of racial discrimination fortransferring a black boy from first grade to kindergarten because ofacademic difficulties.
- Sotomayor found a prison guilty of violating a Muslim prisoner’sfirst amendment rights on the grounds that, unlike other Muslimprisoners, he did not receive a special meal on a Muslim holiday. Theprison’s defense, which the rest of the court accepted, was that thisomission was justifiable because the prisoner was in a specialdetention unit and was not allowed to attend the prison eventcelebrating the holiday.
- Sotomayor sided with plaintiffs who charged that a New York statelaw denying felons the right to vote was racially discriminatory.
Sotomayor’s opinion in these cases was out of line not only with therest of the court’s, but also with that of most Americans. It is unjustand humiliating to punish white Americans for racial discriminationwhere none exists, especially when discrimination against us goesunpunished. Please reject Sotomayor and demand that President Obamachoose a candidate with a record of the impartiality that justicerequires.
