Dear President Obama,
We the undersigned on the enclosed petition, respectfully request thePresident of the United States to sign a National Tartan DayPresidential Proclamation recognizing April 6th of each year, inperpetuity, as a National Holiday Observance, thus placing NationalTartan Day on the official United States of America calendar.
On April 7, 1997, the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 155and on March 9, 2005, the House of Representatives passed HouseResolution 41. These two Congressional Resolutions officially designateApril 6 of each year as National Tartan Day recognizing the outstandingachievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to thefounding and development of our great Nation. Today, more than sixmillion Americans of Scottish descent reside within our borders andcontinue their contributions to our economy, our culture, and ourcommunities, making them the eighth largest ethnic community in theUnited States.April 6th has a special significance for all Americans, and especiallythose Americans of Scottish descent, because the Declaration ofArbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April6th, 1320, and the American Declaration of Independence was modeled onthat inspirational document, and embodies the shared cultures ofliberty, freedom and independence.
