Civilization develops due to a population that is willing to invest work beyond what is needed for their own immediate survival such that it builds for a future they might not live to see. This also includes suppressing one’s individual/personal desires when doing so serves the greater social good.
There are several elements to this. But the first is “genetic similarity.” Altruism has been difficult for evolutionists to explain on the basis of individual selfish genes, and has been best explained in terms of personal sacrifice which may reduce one’s PERSONAL reproductive value can have a net positive effect if it enhances that of people who share a lot of your genes. You can see this in Putnam’s (Harvard) research demonstrating that the more “diverse” an environment, the less the people in that environment will invest in civic infrastructure, charity, etc.
So the core of a civilization, no matter what comes later, is a people sufficiently genetically similar that they are willing to sacrifice for each other. That’s not the ONLY ingredient, but it’s a core component.
The term “racism” has been defined too broadly. But I’ll define it as “drawing a distinction between people of different discernible ethnic groups, AND using that distinction to treat those ethnic groups differently.”
While building a civilization, less genetically related groups are either excluded or kept in a separate class (e.g. slaves or whatever) in order to enhance the altruism necessary for people to work harder for the future. Thus, racism.
As mentioned, that is not all. You may notice that tribes who never developed beyond mud huts etc are often matriarchal, polygamous etc. Civilization develops when men, who will basically do anything for a mate, are assured of the paternity of their offspring — thus giving them a tangible investment in the future. Thus nearly all civilizations of substance created by any race of people had rules pertaining to sex. Sexual rules augment altruism from genetic similarity by giving men a reliable stake in the future.
Obviously, different civilizations have different details. And, over time, many civilizations BECAME multicultural … and died. But before that, they all started as monocultures and established sexual mores.
Excluding a different group from a civilization is “racism” and a prerequisite for initial development. Assuring that each child has a right to a known father is called “patriarchy” and is necessary for inducing men to take risks and sacrifice to build things they will never live to enjoy.
