‘Diversity’ and teacher’s union reach boiling point.
The entire staff of teachers fired in a radical attempt to improveone of the worst performing high schools in Rhode Island(1) will appealtheir dismissals to school authorities, the head of the teachers unionsaid Thursday.
The board of trustees overseeing the school system in CentralFalls, one of the poorest communities in the state, voted Tuesday tofire 88 high school teachers, administrators and other staff by the endof the year.
Those teachers will appeal their dismissals to the schooldistrict’s board of trustees, said Jane Sessums, president of theCentral Falls Teachers’ Union. She plans to meet with union lawyers andother labour representatives in the coming days before deciding whetherto take additional legal action.
The firings came after the state identified Central Falls High Schoolas among the six worst in the state and ordered it to make improvementsby selecting one of four reform plans outlined in federal law.

(1) The City’s recent history focuses on the immigration of many people of Latin American decent. Like the people who arrived before them, these new immigrants have found a home in Central Falls. Many are bringing new flavor and culture to an ethically rich community. The hardships endure throughout its history as a working class community have not affected the community’s structure or its civic pride and attitude. City leaders, ethnic political and religious, have developed into cohesive groups which emphasis the positive image of a city which clearly identifies itself as a “City for all People.” LINK
