A proposition is either true or false. If his (Thomas Jefferson — Ed.) truths were true in 1776, they were always true, and will always remain true.
“By today’s standards, King George III was a very mild tyrant indeed. He taxed his American colonists at a rate of only pennies per annum. His actual impact on their personal lives was trivial. He had arbitrary power over them in law and in principle, but in fact it was seldom exercised. If you compare his rule with that of today’s U.S. Government, you have to wonder why we celebrate our independence.”
Similar arguments to those used to justify the American Revolution and its secession from “tyranny” were used by the Confederacy to justify secession from the economic exploitation of the North, yet the South was mercilessly crushed.
150 years later, the U.S. Government has now become a gigantic parasite, gathering evermore powers to itself and trampling the rights of the individual States along the way. More and more States are warning Washington to stay out of their affairs, and secessionist sentiment is on the rise.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
