Irresponsible parents who think it’s okay for a child who hasn’t even reached puberty to start “transitioning” shouldn’t have the right to drastically change the structure of an entire state’s school system.
California passed a curious bill on Wednesday. If Governor Jerry Brown signs AB 1266, children will be allowed to choose which restrooms to use and which teams they join based on their “gender identity,” not their biological gender, beginning in kindergarten.
Never mind that pre-pubescent children as young as six might not be mature enough to decide to live a “transgendered” lifestyle. Never mind elementary schoolchildren who will be forced to share bathrooms with peers of the opposite gender. Who cares about vulnerable kids when you’re protecting “transgender rights”?
In Colorado, Steven Chavez, the board director of The Colorado Division of Civil Rights, said that a school preventing a six-year-old boy whose parents say is “transgender” from using girls’ facilities is reminiscent of pre-civil rights movement “separate but equal” segregation. Chavez was referring to the case of Coy Mathis, a six-year-old whose parents claim has identified as a female since he grabbed his sister’s pink blanket as a 5-month-old infant. Yes, you read that right. The school initially agreed to allow Coy to use the girls’ restroom, but this past winter break reversed its decision, disallowing Coy using girls’ restrooms. The Mathis parents then bullied Coy’s school into allowing him to use girls’ facilities in what The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund called “a high water mark for transgender students.”
Left-wing Jezebel celebrated AB 1266’s passage, saying:
“…trans students would finally be able to choose which restrooms to use and which sports teams to join based on their gender identity instead of their chromosomes
…It’s really a wonderful step forward.”
But something Left-wing radicals and their cronies aren’t talking about is the effect this radical bill will have on young students who will suddenly be placed in very awkward situations as their peers of the opposite gender can wander into their bathrooms.
As a six-, seven-, or eight-year-old girl, wouldn’t you find it confusing and odd if suddenly the boys in your class could use the girls’ bathroom? As a self-conscious middle-schooler, wouldn’t you find it humiliating to change alongside boys in the locker room? As a seventeen-year-old girl, what would you think of male classmates joining your high school girls’ soccer team?
Irresponsible parents who think it’s okay for a child who hasn’t even reached puberty to start “transitioning” shouldn’t have the right to drastically change the structure of an entire state’s school system. As Matt Staver of the Liberty Council said of the Coy Mathis case, “It is insane to reorder society to accommodate a person’s disordered thought….Biologically this child is male and no amount of subjective thought will change that reality.”
There’s a huge push to deny the truth that men and women are intrinsically different. For example, Sweden added hen, a new gender-neutral pronoun to the online version of its country’s National Encyclopedia. It’s alarming that some people are actually celebrating this anti-child bill.
