The first of the Fort Dix Six to plead guilty likely faces about two years in prison and eventual deportation. But Agron Abdullahu will not testify against his cohorts, his attorney said.
Abdullahu, the only one of the six not charged with plotting to kill soldiers at Fort Dix, pleaded guilty in federal court in Camden yesterday to conspiracy to provide firearms to three of his former codefendants, who are illegal immigrants.
His attorney, Richard Coughlin, described that as a simple and “fairly technical” weapons offense.
The plea will have no impact on the trial for the other five defendants, two of their attorneys said. The remaining five were indicted in June on allegations that they were inspired by al-Qaeda to plot to kill American soldiers.”Pretty much, you go to a shooting range with a bunch of guys who were here illegally, you shoot, and you get the guns back. That’s what he pled guilty to,” said Rocco Cipparone, who represents defendant Mohammad Shnewer of Cherry Hill. “That has no implications for my client.”
Authorities have said Abdullahu, 25, who lived in Buena Township, Atlantic County, told the others in secretly recorded conversations that killing civilians would be against Islam, their religion, and that attacking Fort Dix would be “crazy.”
But Coughlin said any conversation Abdullahu might have had concerning a plot against the Army base would have been theoretical and innocent on his part.
“People say a lot of things when they don’t know their every word is being recorded,” he said.
He said his client had known nothing about the alleged plot, which is why he will not testify.
