Alliance Defense Fund promises appeal for British Airways employee

An attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund says an appeal is certain in a lawsuit on behalf of a Christian employee of British Airways who claims she was subjected to a discriminatory policy that is not applied to employees of other faiths.
A London court ruled that the airline did not engage in unlawful discrimination when it suspended Nadia Eweida for refusing to hide a cross necklace while at work. The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) provided funding for Eweida’s case against the airline for discriminating against her, but not employees of other religions.
In October 2006, Eweida — who works at a British Airlines check-in counter at Heathrow airport — was told she must either cover up or remove a necklace with a small cross. She was placed on unpaid leave when she refused to conceal the cross.
ADF attorney Mike Johnson says it is not permissible for employers to discriminate against Christian employees. “According to British Airways, it’s okay for employees to wear a symbol of their faith — unless it’s a Christian cross,” he says.”And of course, we know that anywhere in the world Christian employees should not be singled out for discrimination.
“The problem here is that the policy of British Airways is completely discriminatory,” Johnson continues, “because persons and employees who adhere to other religions, like Islam and Hinduism, are allowed to wear their faith-related items, including clothing, jewelry, and religious markings.”
