White farmers driven off their farms

A frenzied campaign by supporters of Zimbabwe’s dictator Robert Mugabe has led to the forced expulsion of at least 134 whites from their farmlands in the days following the contested “election.” This out of a mere 400 white farmers estimated to be left in all of Zimbabwe.
Commercial Farmers Union president Trevor Gifford said that while most have since gone back to their farms, about thirty still have not been able to, while all whites face a climate of intense intimidation that observers fear will explode into outright genocide as pressure on Mugage grows internationally and domestically. “Some of those who are are still on the farms are still facing repeated harassment and abuse despite police intervention. In some cases the police are reluctant to get involved as they indicate that the issue is now political,” Gifford said.
Mugabe, whose rule has ruined what was once the breadbasket of Africa when, as Rhodesia, whites ruled, depends on so-called “war veterans,” former terrorists who fought against Rhodesia, to keep his grip in the face of a non-existent economy, hyperinflation and hunger. In 2000 Mugabe confiscated many of the remaining white farms, giving them to his “veterans,” who are now leading renewed attempts to seize the few white farms still left. They are spurred on by Mugabe’s claims that the election, the results of which he refuses to divulge, was part of a plot by whites to “take back the land” he stole.Observers are concerned that the climate of ethnic cleansing may lead to outright genocide, mainly because Mugabe has committed genocide before. Numerous whites were murdered by Mugabe’s thugs both before and after “independence,” and Mugabe, a Shona tribesman, engineered the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the rival Ndebele people in the “Gukurahundi” campaign begun in 1982, two years after “independence.”
Needless to say, if some white dictator was accused of driving off an estimated one third of non-whites from their lands, there would be an international outcry and, most likely, an invasion.
