NAACP Decries Burglar’s Death by Homeowner

A rally for justice for “victim” Marques McGhee is scheduled.

The investigation into the shooting death of an alleged burglary suspect was “sloppy” family members of the 19-year-old, who was shot, told Clayton County Commissioners Tuesday.

A protest rally is planned by the NAACP to push for an expanded inquiry in the shooting.

Police have said evidence in the Feb. 20 shooting points to a justifiable use of force by a 16-year-old, who knew the victim. But family members of Marques McGhee, of Riverdale, and representatives of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, maintain that too many questions remain unanswered.

However, Clayton County police said they have no evidence to support anything that conflicts with the story provided them by the 16-year-old, who did the shooting. Interim Police Chief Jeff Turner said the investigation was ongoing.

McGhee was shot eight times and killed during an alleged burglary at a 6388 Camp Road house.

Nine people, starting with McGhee’s mother and ending with the president of the county’s NAACP, questioned the shooting and asked the commissioners to step in.

The investigation was “sloppy, mishandled and not handled by professionals,” said Tabitha Patrice Eberhard, McGhee’s mother. McGhee’s aunt, Shelia McGhee, asked for a new investigative team. She called the shooting premeditated and “execution-style.”
